Love this take on the “dress that broke the internet”! And a new word 🙌 amagomorph👌

This reminds me of how noise is used through an iterative process to train AI image generators. Taking advantage of this process with multiple prompts from different directions can lead to somewhat messy, but definitely legible optical illusions. See the work of Ryan Burgert here: https://diffusionillusions.com/

This to me seems like an interesting way of understanding the fractured and often paradoxical way that Trump speaks. Creating noisy “images” and testing them iteratively, refining for different perspectives, until the end result is legible from multiple angles. Of course Magritte asked that we remember the image is not reality.

Eee thank you!!

Love that connection with visual noise to disrupt. Exploring Burgert’s work—wild! That reminds me of all the color illusions I found when looking for students Except for the ones by Albers, they were strange and not fun for me to look at. Like they have some disturbing, or just not beautiful, component that feels unsettling. Made me wonder if there are people trying to make beautiful ones, and if it just isn’t really possible because the demands of the illusion restrict aesthetic choices.

And yes to that being how he speaks and remembering the images from words are not real, more like mirages. Beautifully put.

So gorgeous! and I love the thoughtfulness of it. It really feels like we're living a weird double-world right now and this is a great way of exploring that while also being a fun throwback to a meme lol. I remember reading about the dress phenomenon back in the day, and as I was scrolling down the page, the image suddenly changed from black and blue to white and gold, and it was a really jarring experience that showed how the perception could shift in an instant. Very very cool!

Thank you so much for your thoughts here! I’ve also heard from a few students who saw it one way 10 years ago and the other way now. I wonder how common it if for people to be able to switch perception. So neat.

Very cool. 'perceptual painting' as a matter of practice is such a wild thing to step into socially speaking. the idea of perception as a folding, of creating these weird waveforms in physical space is ripe for more work... Of course also makes me think of photons and particle/wave theory! A favorite philosopher of mine posited that any particles we perceive are merely the tips of deep waveforms 'beneath' perception... Weird stuff

Ahh very neat—thank you so much for engaging, Daniel! YES to particle wave theory. I’ve also been rolling that around in my brain quite a bit lately.

I like thinking of that “beneath” as tucked around corners that are folded to us. Like a wild origami of space/time/dimensions
