Wheat Paste Map
October 2025 First Friday
This month I started a little early (what a novel concept!) and collaborated with Kelly Sullivan1, artist, educator, and friend, to create this screen print map.
We designed the image: for this map, the zoomed-in downtown gallery clump is placed inside the icon, and the north and south outliers route from that point. Had I not worked ahead, I might have had notice to include the Pinto Bean Museum at Homewrecker Arts and other unmapped shows, but alas, good things always pop up last minute.
We screen printed: we did this on thrifted garments and newsprint, learning lots along the way. Please go snag a print or shirt for free or“pay-what-you-want” at The Emporium (the only indoor wheat-pasted location).
We wheat pasted: we mixed up flour and hot water into a paste, and brushed it on exterior walls of (approving) galleries2, placed and smoothed the newsprint, and applied another layer of paste to saturate the paper fibers and ensure it stays.
October is host to Knoxville’s second annual Knoxville Small Press Fest,3 and this event is a good reminder that print has been—and can be—revolutionary: with basic materials we can spread ideas like wildfire, making culture rich like soil after fire, able to support flourishing life.

Check out the maps all over town this week at the galleries marked with ‘⿻’ below. I’m grateful for the project support from each of these spaces. Tag me in a photo and snag one of the limited-edition shirts4 from The Emporium if you want to make me smile real big:)

What a champion. Thank you for everything, Kelly!!!
Each location was sanctioned by generous gallery directors and property owners (Though once I started, I really wanted to paste everywhere…) And thank you to dear friends: printmaker, Cara Pfennigwerth, and artist/poet Chelsie Nunn— thank you so very much for helping wheat paste etc <3
The shirts have a wide range of registration alignment… we enjoyed talking about all the things we learned as we went and would do differently next time — these fabric prints aren’t spot on or quite legible, but they are still fun:) Venmo me if you want, or sign up for a paid subscription, or just take one and enjoy it:)
Thanks for the time lapse, Heather!
First Friday maps will always be free—subscribe and click “None/free” to receive them each month.
Other art maps for non-First Friday evenings go out to paid subscribers. I so appreciate your support <3 To chip in $1/month, click the “Annual” option.
